7. Dead Girls - Nancy Lee
"You are addicted to television news. The speculation, the body bags, the hopeful high-school photos; dead girls, everywhere." Series of bleak unconnected snapshots set in Vancouver, beautifully written but short on resolution. There's a killer just been caught. This affects none of the stories directly, but is mentioned in most of them. Mostly good, except for when she tries to be Brett Easton-Ellis. Then, she fails.

8. The Librarian - Larry Beinhart
Okay thriller with political message about election stealing.

9. V for Vendetta - Alan Moore
Graphic Novel. Sort of a super hero thing but not really. About a masked revolutionary/terrorist in a future fascist england. An early work of Moore's. Exhibits the development of his knack for examining in-depth characters which in other hands of the time might have been caricatures. Also: that V guy is creepy.

10. The Mystery Play - Grant Morrison
Graphic Novel. I...don't get it. What does the coat mean?

11. Silver Birch, Blood Moon - various authors
Short stories based on fairy tales, most of them quite good. Also has ten pages of "recommended reading" in the back of it, which I need to somehow copy before I return this book to its rightful owner...

13. The Dragon Can't Dance - Earl Lovelace
"All o' we is one." Lovelace makes the shanty town life of Calvary Hill, Trinidad, so solid you could touch it, the atmosphere of the carnival so infectious you get caught up in it, and the characters so real you feel like you've known real people, living in a world made of other real people, and not just cogs in an author's design. I loved this.

Now: guitar!
