I saw Joanna Newsom play at the Metro last night.
*dies*
The harp is, I'm told, a notoriously difficult instrument to play. You don't have no crazy "keys and hammers" setup like on them newfangled pianis - it's a very physical instrument. To witness someone play a difficult instrument and sing is... words fail. Or rather, in the case of her shiny but lyrically dense pieces of fairy tales, experience and wordplay, they succeed. One of the new songs she played, it may have gone for twenty minutes, I'm not sure. I kind of got lost in it. *swoon* I don't think I've ever seen anyone do even remotely that epic with just themselves and an instrument.
Also, Smog was there. That man is deadpan. I mean, I knew he was deadpan, but...man...
Oh, and he's quite good at writing songs as well.
I don't seem to have time, of late, to properly attend to my friends page. How do people who have to study and stuff ever manage this much attention? Every time I connect there's like 60 new posts for me to read. So I read them all, but mostly don't manage to comment where I'd like to. So, just so you know, I have some thing very insightful/useful/annoying/witty/sexy to say about that post you made the other day. Just so you know.
Are you ever at a gig, and you notice that in the audience there are a number of people who bear a striking resemblance to the person/s performing that night, and do you ever wonder to yourself, are you just wearing that out of tribute for tonight, oh person? Or have you modeled all your wardrobe on your idol? Or, have have you always dressed like this, and when you saw an album cover by chance one rainy winter afternoon, did your eyes turn into little lovehearts, just for this shared aesthetic, and did you think to yourself "Finally, I am home"?
No? Okay then.

Well... I for one, sadly, do not have classes at uni. So I never left the house, and came downstairs regularly to post on LJ in order to stay sane. It probably looked like I wasted a lot more time than I actually did. And it did keep me sane. :)
As for your last paragraph, yes, I've seen people like that. I do my eyeliner similarly to Simon from the Cure (well, when he wore it in the 80s...), but that's not actually deliberate. I'd love a huge 80s haircut like Simon from the Cure, or Nick Cave in the early 80s... But I wouldn't actually do it. I think a lot of my musical heros probably have had some effect on my clothing. Nothing I can actually specifically point out though.

I'm not sure the "giant black thatch" would suit you. It did look good on Nick, though.

Date: 2005-10-12 11:28 am (UTC)It would suit me! It'd have to have some crimped bits. I will never have that hair-do though. I get sick of any colour other than my own after a week...
