My youngest brother is in a band, and they are playing at the Annandale some time between 12 and 3 on Sunday. Hurrah!

Aaargh! My faffing about has crippled my plans yet again. There seems to be no way I can get into any of the uni courses I was interested in without having done a bridging course, and that ship has already sailed. Grrrr. There is a TAFE diploma course on the subject of my career that recognises experience, so in theory it wouldn't take me long to finish. But although I like what I do, I don't really feel any desire to make it a bigger part of who I am. To tell the truth, I'm not sure how much longer I want to do it. I've seen kids go from little to teenagers and go off and do their own thing, and played some small part in their lives, which is extremely satisfying. But I'm not sure it would always continue to be so. Because for the most part, once they leave, they're gone.
I should be sensible about things such as a career and education, but my will will have it's way. I have to follow my various dreams.

So I was thinking, instead of Nano this year, I could record an album in a month. Then I thought, why wait until November? I can do it in October. Maybe I can even still do the novel thing.

So let me see, I guess I should set targets. Fifteen songs minimum, written and recorded, by the time that October is over. One every two days sounds just about do-able, even with the first week of the month being made up of ferociously tiring vacation care work.

With such a schedule, I may run short on inspiration, so I am hereby calling for suggestions on the following:

a) Subjects to write songs about.
b) Genres to play them in.

Also anyone at all who wants to play instruments on, sing on, or even write lyrics for the project will recieve love by the bucket-full.

To do:
Clean my room.
Get the following:
Batteries for the loop station
A new guitar (eep!), and possible some sort of non-crappy sounding effects processor, if such a thing exists.
My e-bow back from Nick
Hard drive?
Talent

What sort of thing would you like to sing?
Would you like to provide your own words?

ummm...i can sing all kind of things...what sort of music were you thinking about?

I'd like to have a go aat writing something, but i'm not a terribly good lyricist, so i might end up wanting to sing something somene else has written

Genres of music matter not (although to sing in the grammatical structure of Yoda a challenge would be)... Folk. Rock. Bad techno. I'm easy.

Write some words. We will make stuff happen.

Folk and Rock are eeeexcellent genres...Although sadly i don't have a very Rock voice...

I'll have a go at this lyrics thing too.

I'd play household objects. Poorly. But October is rather full for me, alas. Stupid thesis. *kicks it*

Oh :(
I wish there was no uni. I want to be a collaborator. :( If it helps, feel free to use the piano here (it's starting to go out of tune at the lower end, but it still sounds ok).

Weekends on the school hols are out, then?

They're.. a distant possibility. Because I have to work on them, and will only be free if my shift is cancelled (which happens about 50% of the time). And even then, I have to drive an hour to beecroft, pick up the drums, drive an hour back, play, then take them home again when school starts. It sucks, I would love to be involved but it's not looking good. :(

You need another drum kit.

I suppose labour day is out of the question? *pouts*

No, not out of the question. *thinks* Does it need a whole kit? maybe i can just bring half of it?

A friend of mine couldn't do Nano a few years back because he had to work, so he wrote an interesting online journal entry every day for a month. Some of those were good!

Anyway, your month of album-writing should be called ChriMoAlWri... or something. You need to own the month!

I like to sing. Some people tell me I sing well. I should've taken Carnatic music lessons back when I had the opportunity.
Joining in on would be fun and interesting. Pick me!

For the Carnatic stuff, I'm not sure I could play proper ragas on western instruments. Except maybe slide guitar, but I'd still have to figure out how.

But yes: snowball.

Eh, I only mentioned Carnatic music because that's the style I want to learn... I don't actually know it too well (in a technical sense) yet.

Also, this was the next thing on my friends list after your post:
http://www.catandgirl.com/view.php?289

Here are some subjects to write songs about:
tea
trains
hats, and people who wear them
tiled floors, and how useful they are
Reclaim the Streets
warm rain
staying up late
fancy pants
all of the above.

Smithy's (sp??) is a good place for guitar effects. I got a really good Digitech multieffects (equal to the ones that sell for over $1000 new, but an older secondhand one) for under $200.

It's in... Marickville (oh god I can't spell it!) I think. Or... Uhmmm. I'm just thinking... I go there with my father sometimes, and we go to Bar Italia too, so it's definitely around there somewhere...
There's a website I think.

Says they're in Camperdown.. Hmmm. Unless Camperdown is where I thought Marickville was... Hmm.

Yeah, I *knew* that street just near Lou's house looked like that one. In fact, dnahum might recall me saying "Hey isn't Smithy's around here".
So is that near Marrickville at all, or am I completely crazy?

Date: 2005-09-26 04:13 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] roseapparatus.livejournal.com
Um, it's definately not in Marrickville... it's kind of close I s'pose... it's in Stanmore, and Stanmore runs down the hill into Marrickville... yeah it's near Marrickville.

...Oh, Camperdown they reckon? Ok, it's the end of Stanmore furthest from Marrickville in that case, to be finickity.

LOL! Oh well... At least I didn't completely get it wrong. I mean, I could have said Penrith, I s'pose... :P

I'm pretty sure Dad's driven through Marrickville to get there (maybe that's near Leichardt, and on the way from Epping...?), because I think that's where we were when we saw the strangest thing - it was a horse and cart attached to the back of a towe truck. I have no idea what they were intending to do with that set-up...

Anything comes up you think'd suit what I can do vocally and instrumentally, you know this is something I wish I could do, and maybe I can. I'll try to pull my sox up re. practicing & writing, somehow, in my spare minutes around work. But mainly, you know where to find me & if something jumps out at you...
