I saw some news on a commercial channel this evening, and was unlucky enough to have my senses assaulted by the hideous visage of "our" attorney-general, who is surely some sort of poorly disguised reptile-beast from the crueler regions of the galaxy, spewing forth platitudes on the relative nature of civil rights. Apparently some of the laws being considered currently include:
()a national identity card
()a ban on inflammatory language
()even longer detention of terrorist suspects without charging them
Of special interest is the ban on inflammatory language. With all of the attention on bombs, our security agencies have been entirely lackadaisical in pursuing the much greater threat to the populous that is swear-words. Dear God, their must be legions of fundamentalist potty-mouths perched at our borders this very instant! Quickly, hand the government military rule, or we shall all be obliterated by filth!
Of course, there will be the slight drawback that anytime I use the terms "darn", "fuck" or "SPH" in public I run the risk of getting shot five times in the face by our nation's finest, but it's a small price to pay. Civil rights are all relative, after all.
FFS.
I'm not sure who it is who would decide which language is inflammatory. But my fear is that when they say "inflammatory language", what they will end up meaning is Arabic.

Date: 2005-08-07 04:44 am (UTC)These were both considered unquestionably bad things to say, so much so that there have been politicians all over the media talking about bans on inflammatory language.
So basically you can still say cunt, eg: all moslems are cunts!
But you can not criticise the war, eg: Maybe we should stop killing Iraqis.
Don't tell anyone I said that last part, they'll come for me in the dead of night, although saying that is probably just as bad...
The government! They are wonderful and I support everything they do!
