My novel will be fantasy, in that it will be about what happens when the odd thoughts in peoples heads are made real.

If you have had any strange random daydreams ("that cloud looks just like an elephant"...*whistling noise* ..."oh my god no!" *SPLAT*) that you wouldn't mind seeing go in a novel, I'd be grateful if you shared here.

I'll put it in my emergency file for when I have writers block =D

God, I have a lot of dreams like that. Just don't ask me to remember any off the top of my head. I think the most recent dream had a japanese schoolgirl and an big eyeless black guy with dreads, who made up the other two components of a satanic cult that I was an unwilling member of. Then we ritualistically and violently removed my dogs eyes and tortured him. Then I was like "hey guys, this satanist stuff is boring and I feel sorry for my dog, let's go get ice cream and start a charity for homeless kids" and they were like "yeah, cool idea Rob, lets go!".

Isn't that kind of like Sphere? Then they decide to give back the powers to make what's in their heads real, because they realise they're not ready for it yet. ?:)

I've never seen Sphere, but I figure seeing as how Sphere is on a space station(?) and my story is in a town in rural NSW, I'm probably safe from any accidental plagiarism. Also, it's not really about people having power to make stuff real at will, it's more about thoughts becoming solid at random and inconvenient times.

I may have to work hard to incorporate eyeless dog-mutilating satanic cults into the plot, but I'll do my best.

Actually, now I think of it, can anyone think of a suitably witty and/or mysterious name for an Australian country town?

WELL, Australian's seem to have a penchant for naming things after what's there. Shark Bay, Sandy Beach, Blue Mountains. Maybe you could get an idea for a town from that.

Sphere was at the bottom of the ocean I think... and they didn't know their thoughts were materialising, weird things started happening and they eventually cottoned on. It was kinda cool. :D

Actually, Sphere is a book by Michael Crichton. Fabulous and original (unlike so many of his books), this book is pretty much what you're talking about writing.

A UFO is found buried under coral, proving it to be tens of thousands of years old. A bunch of people are sent down to find out about the aliens and what happened to them, and are (of course- it's not that original) cut off from the outside. They start to explore the ship, and experience weird things. People start dying. In the middle of the spaceship is a sphere with strange designs all over it and people become obssessed with finding out how to open it.

It turns out that the sphere is making all of their paranoid delusions, fears and wishes come true for the people who worked out how to get into the sphere. They escape.

Why not name the town Dead Dog, and thus include both ideas at once!

I'd love to see animal ideas come true in your story. That could be fun.
